2 plus 2 equals 5?!

The “2 PLUS 2 possibilities become 5 realities“ project provided support for the professional development of the leadership teams and the organizations’ capacity, to make the services, offered by youth organizations, working on the issues of youth employment, apt to the needs of youth groups.

During the economical crisis, youth unemployment has reached critical levels in many European countries, but according to Eurostat data, a trend toward the gradual revitalizing of the economy and labor market has emerged around the end of 2013. European programs and national measures for youth employment outline opportunities for education, mobility, entrepreneurship, hiring, internships, apprenticeships, etc. for young people. However, in order for the national and international measures for dealing with youth unemployment to be effective, coordinated efforts on a local and national level, improvement of the NGO activity in the youth sphere, as well as building stable partnerships with stakeholders in this process are necessary.

The project satisfied the professional needs of the leadership teams to improve their competences in organizational management, developing management and leadership skills, negotiating and creating lasting partnerships, developing and implementing joint projects in the field of youth employment.

The training

The training course for the „2 PLUS 2 possibilities become 5 realities“ project was held from 24 to 31 October 2014, in the town of Dobrinishte. The training team included professional trainers from Bulgaria, with experience in non formal education, experts in the field of team building, effective communication, leadership, creativity, project management, improvisational theatre.

The program was designed to offer the participants an intense training experience, filled with challenging tasks, changing of viewpoints, getting out of their comfort zone. The activities and methods, applied by the trainers, were aimed at:

  • Getting to know one another and “breaking the ice” in the group, creating a friendly and productive working environment to promote effective interpersonal relations.
  • Personal and professional development of leadership skills – team building activities to increase the cohesion and dynamic in the group. Accentuating the communication skills, skills to make a group decision with a consensus, building trust, negotiating, etc.
  • Creative and critical thinking.
  • Presenting the opportunities of the Erasmus + program, brainstorming for future projects, developing a project proposal, looking for ways of financing, presenting the idea to like-minded people.
  • Educational visitation – visiting organizations, operating in Razlog, and meeting youths and children from the target groups (without parents, with disabilities), sharing experience from local youth and social workers.

The training program provoked the participants to rethink the organizational sustainability and capacity of their civic organizations, as a condition for achieving social prestige and recognizability, accepting stakeholder partners as equals in regard to youth work. Cooperation with stakeholders in solving youth problems is a condition for achieving common goals, creating an added value for NGO and for the youth groups, with whom the organizations work.

At the end of the training the participants changed their action formula and realized that a goal can be reached by combining thousands of options, as long as you can see them, be flexible, adapt to changes and be able to create valuable social connections, strengthening friendship, like-mindedness and partnership. The participants who completed the program increased their organizational and personal competences by acquiring:

Knowledge about:

  • Standards for good management and their role for the prestige and influence of civic organizations, at the local and national level;
  • Essense and role of partnerships, forms of negotiation and measuring the effects for the organization;
  • Innovative and practical approaches and methods, implemented by the partners;
  • Programs for financing as tools for youth employment;
  • The state of youth employment and the labor market in other countries and in Europe as a whole.

Skills for:

  • long term planning
  • effective use of resources

  • implementing the standards of publicity, accountability, effectiveness and efficiency
  • flexible decision making and successful conflict resolution
